Register of Otago & Southland Marriages 1848 to 1920

Introduction :

This register includes all indexed New Zealand Presbyterian Marriages for the regions of Otago and Southland up to 1935.

Please note that many of our indexes currently finish in 1920. Our indexing project is ongoing and we will be extending both the date range for existing parishes as well as indexing registers of parishes as they arrive into the archive collection.

If the marriage you are looking for is later than the range indexed on the database or is from a Presbyterian parish not listed below, please contact us and we can search our indexes and collections for you.

Information Recorded on the Original Certificates :

Click Here to see examples of information recorded on pre 1880 and post 1880 marriage certificates.

Ordering Copies of Certificates :

Please contact us to order a certificate, citing the names/date/parish.

The cost per certificate, sent via email, is $20.00. We are happy to discuss costs if you would prefer a photocopy of the certificate to be posted to you.

Due to the very fragile nature of some early registers, including faded handwriting, it may be necessary in some cases to provide a full typed transcript instead of a copy of the original certificate.

Certificates still held by parishes or local museums or libraries:

Where registers are still held by the Parish or local museum this will be noted on the relevant index. In such cases please contact the parish or local repository directly to enquire about how to receive copies of the certificate.

Note on Missing Records :

An asterisk * after the Parish Code denotes known missing or damaged registers - refer to "Lost Archives" for additional information. You may still apply for a copy of any missing certificate from the Registrar of Births, Deaths & Marriages
